If you're used to tapping Uber every time you need a ride, Guatapé will require an adjustment. Here's what actually works for ride-hailing and taxis in and around Guatapé.

Uber in Guatapé

Uber exists in Medellín but has a complicated legal status in Colombia — it operates in a regulatory gray area. In practice, Uber works in Medellín's urban core (El Poblado, Laureles, Centro), but coverage drops off dramatically outside the city. In Guatapé itself, you're unlikely to find an Uber driver. Requesting a ride from Guatapé back to Medellín via Uber will usually time out with no drivers available.

InDriver (Recommended)

InDriver is the app that actually works for the Guatapé corridor. Unlike Uber, InDriver lets you set your own price and negotiate with drivers. It's widely used throughout Antioquia, including in smaller towns.

For a Guatapé-to-Medellín ride, open InDriver, set your pickup and destination, and offer a price. A fair starting offer is COP 120,000–150,000. Drivers will counter. Expect to settle around COP 130,000–170,000 depending on time of day and demand.

Within Guatapé town, InDriver is overkill — distances are walkable or tuk-tuk territory.

DiDi

DiDi (the Chinese ride-hailing company) operates in Medellín and some larger Colombian cities. Like Uber, its coverage doesn't extend to Guatapé. Don't count on it here.

Tuk-Tuks (Mototaxis)

Within Guatapé, tuk-tuks are king. These three-wheeled motorized carts zip around town constantly. You'll see them parked near the plaza, the bus stop, the waterfront, and near La Piedra.

Prices: COP 5,000–10,000 for rides within town. COP 15,000–20,000 to La Piedra del Peñol. COP 25,000–40,000 to lakeside fincas or more remote spots. Always agree on the price before getting in.

Traditional Taxis

Guatapé doesn't have a formal taxi service with meters. If you see a car with a "taxi" sign, it's essentially an informal driver. Negotiate the price upfront. For longer trips (to El Peñol, the airport, or Medellín), these informal taxis may be your only option if InDriver isn't working.

Getting from Medellín to Guatapé by App

Requesting a Medellín-to-Guatapé ride on InDriver is possible from El Poblado or Laureles. Offer COP 130,000–160,000. Some drivers are familiar with the route and happy to do it. The ride takes about 1.5–2 hours. This is a good option for groups of 2–4 who want door-to-door service.
