Here's something most visitors don't realize: Medellín's main airport (José María Córdova, code MDE) is actually closer to Guatapé than to Medellín city. The airport sits in Rionegro, in the eastern highlands — the same direction as Guatapé. Going straight to Guatapé from the airport saves you the 1-hour descent into Medellín and the subsequent 2-hour bus ride back east. Smart travelers skip the city entirely when Guatapé is their first stop.
Option 1: Private Transfer (Recommended)
A private car from MDE airport to Guatapé takes approximately 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes and costs COP 150,000–200,000 ($41–54 USD). You can arrange this through:
Your hotel or hostel in Guatapé — many offer airport pickup. Contact them before your flight with your arrival time and flight number.
InDriver app — search for drivers at the airport willing to go to Guatapé. Negotiation is normal.
Airport transfer desks — located in the arrivals hall. Ask for "transporte a Guatapé directo." Prices are slightly higher (COP 200,000–250,000) but convenient.
Option 2: Bus via Rionegro
There's no direct public bus from the airport to Guatapé. But there is a workaround:
Take a taxi or bus from the airport to Rionegro bus terminal (about 15 minutes, COP 10,000–15,000). From there, catch a bus toward El Peñol/Guatapé. These run regularly and cost approximately COP 12,000–15,000. Total journey time: about 1.5–2 hours with the connection.
This is the cheapest option but adds complexity with luggage transfers and schedule coordination.
Option 3: Shared Shuttle
Some tour operators and hostels run shared shuttles between the airport and Guatapé, especially on weekends. Check with your accommodation or search for "shuttle aeropuerto Guatapé" on WhatsApp groups for Colombian travel. Prices are typically COP 60,000–80,000 per person.
Why This Matters for Itinerary Planning
If you're flying into Medellín and Guatapé is on your list, consider making it your first stop. Land at MDE, transfer straight to Guatapé (1 hour), spend a night or two, then bus into Medellín when you're ready. You save the round trip from Medellín and get to experience Guatapé without the day-trip rush.
For the return, the reverse works too — bus from Guatapé to Rionegro, taxi to the airport. Check out of Medellín a day early and overnight in Guatapé before your flight.
