If you're driving to Guatapé — whether from Medellín, Rionegro, or the airport — you'll need somewhere to leave your car. Parking in Guatapé is manageable but gets competitive on weekends. Here's where to go and what to expect.

Parking in Guatapé Town

There are several paid parking lots (parqueaderos) within walking distance of the main plaza and the malecón (waterfront promenade). Most are privately operated and charge by the hour or by the day.

Daily rates: COP 10,000–15,000 for a full day. Some lots charge by the hour (COP 3,000–5,000/hour) which adds up fast, so ask for the tarifa del día (daily rate) when you arrive.

Best lots: Look for the parqueaderos on or near Calle del Recuerdo, which puts you in the heart of the zócalo district. There's also a larger lot near the bus terminal area at the top of town, which is slightly cheaper but a longer walk to the waterfront.

Parking at La Piedra del Peñol

La Piedra has its own parking area near the base of the stairway. This lot fills up early on weekends — arrive before 9:00 AM to guarantee a spot. Expect to pay COP 8,000–10,000. The lot is attended and reasonably secure.

If the main lot is full, there are overflow areas along the road below — informal but commonly used. Don't leave valuables visible in your car.

Overnight Parking

If you're staying in Guatapé overnight, check whether your accommodation includes parking — many fincas and hotels do. For hostels in town that don't have their own lot, the public parqueaderos near the plaza offer overnight rates of COP 15,000–20,000. Confirm the overnight rate in advance and ask if the lot is gated (encerrado) overnight.

Street Parking

Free street parking exists on residential streets away from the center, but spaces are limited and locals use them. On weekdays you might find a spot; on weekends, don't bother. The paid lots are cheap enough to not be worth the gamble.

Motorcycle Parking

Motorcycles and scooters are easier — most lots charge COP 3,000–5,000 for the day, and you can often park near the entrance of restaurants and shops informally. At La Piedra, motorcycle parking is closer to the entrance than car parking.

Safety

Guatapé is a safe town by Colombian standards. Attended parking lots are secure. General precautions apply: don't leave bags, cameras, or electronics visible through windows. Lock your doors. Use the attended lots rather than unattended street spots if you're leaving the car for more than a couple of hours.
